Poetry and Online Memorials

Poetry is a powerful and emotional medium of communication. As such, using poetry in your online memorial can be especially meaningful. Finding the right poem to express the right message can be difficult in such a vast sea of prose and poetry. Consider the message you want to send; consider the message your loved one would want to send, and find or compose a poem that expresses that message.

In addition to including a piece of poetry, consider allowing others to contribute their original work as a means of mourning loss or celebrating life. Below, I’ve included a piece of poetry that I hope will encourage you to find the right poem for the right message.

Joy in Death by Emily Dickinson

If tolling bell I ask the cause.
‘A soul has gone to God,’
I’m answered in a lonesome tone;
Is heaven then so sad?

That bells should joyful ring to tell
A soul had gone to heaven,
Would seem to me the proper way
A good news should be given.
